Marvel has the Avengers, and now Warner Brothers will have the Justice League.
After years of rumors and false starts, Warner Brothers has finally confirmed that it is moving towards a Justice League movie. Ever since Ben Affleck was announced to appear as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the upcoming sequel to Man of Steel – tentatively called Batman Vs. Superman – rumors began to circulate that this was going to be a quiet trial to a Justice League film. When it was announced that Gal Gadot from the Fast & Furious series was being added as Wonder Woman as well, it seemed like a done deal.
Once talk turned last week to the possibility that stage actor Ray Fisher would also make an appearance as Vic Stone/Cyborg, there really was no way that the studio could conceal the plan any longer.
Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Warner Bros. president of worldwide production Greg Silverman confirmed that the studio has indeed set plans for a Justice League film.
No release date has been set as of yet, but it will follow the upcoming Superman film for sure. “It will be a further expansion of this universe,” said Mr. Silverman. “’Superman vs Batman’ will lead into ‘Justice League.’”
Warner Brothers has been in desperate need of a home run as Marvel has continued to leave them in the dust. While the studio did enjoy success with Chris Nolan’s Batman trilogy, and the Man of Steel did fairly well, nothing has been able to match the earnings juggernaut that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
With Batman Vs. Superman currently scheduled for May 6, 2016 – the same day as Captain America 3 – there is likely no way Justice League can hit theaters before 2018. By that time we could potentially be looking at the release of The Avengers 3, and what a showdown that could turn out to be.
