Samsung surprised us all when it sent out invitations for a health-focused event on May 28. The company just recently announced a trio of new wearable devices with built-in heart rate monitors and an emphasis on fitness tracking, but was a fourth device on the way? Apparently not, at least according to Samsung VP Stefan Heuser, who bluntly told Re/code, “It is not a product announcement.”
Heuser works at Samsung’s Strategy and Innovation Center in Menlo, Park California, a branch of the South Korean tech titan that focuses on partnering with other companies rather than pumping out new devices. So it makes sense that we won’t see any new products announced. The event is also being hosted by the part of Samsung that makes electronics components like processors and screens, so whatever it does unveil won’t be targeted directly at consumers.
As for exactly what Samsung is planning to announce, there’s no still no clear answer. Re/code suggests it could have something to do with the digital health lab the company is building as part of a new partnership with the University of California, San Francisco, but we probably won’t know for sure until the May 28 event.
If you’re hoping for a new Samsung device, however, you’ll probably have to wait a bit longer.
