Apple unveiled its new iOS 8 Health application and HealthKit platform during WWDC 2014 earlier this week, showing that it certainly has a growing interest in health tracking. While we’re still expecting an iWatch to complement that application, there are certainly tons of existing wearable products and activity tracking apps that already exist, and Apple highlights some of them in a new commercial that aired last night.
Named “Strength,” the commercial shows a woman swimming, a man standing on a scale checking his weight, a woman running and various people working out in the gym. Each person has a unique activity tracker, whether its the Nike+ Running app that appears in one spot, or something else. Apple is clearly highlighting how people around the world use iPhones to track fitness and health, and it’s again driving a notion into consumers minds: that Apple very much cares about health and that, if you wish to do so, it’s easy to track your own activities using Apple products such as the iPhone 5s.
The ad doesn’t set the stage for the iWatch, which is still just the subject of rumors and insider reports, though it does show the multitude of activity trackers that may soon tap into its new Health app in iOS 8. We already know several major developers are interested, including the firm behind RunKeeper, and we suspect Apple will continue to drive this message in future ads in an effort to drum up interest in health monitoring tools.
