Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs is one of animation’s more pleasant surprises, doing the beloved 1978 book justice while managing to create a world for new audiences. If the first two movies weren’t enough, Sony Pictures Animation announced the franchise will make its way to the small screen. Steve!
In partnership with DHX Media, the show will focus on Flint Lockwood and Sam Sparks as they go about their lives in Shallow Falls before food started raining down. Naturally, other characters will likely show up, too, including Flint’s stoic dad, Tim, Steve the Monkey, Earl (before he becomes a cop) and Brent, among others. Sony and DHX Media have signed an agreement that will produce twenty-six, twenty-two minute episodes, which means there is plenty more of Shallow Falls to explore.
“We believe audiences both old and new are going to love this fiercely funny franchise reimagined for the small screen,” said DHX Media President and COO, Steven DeNure.
Both movies have garnered a combined gross of $510 worldwide, so the brand is definitely a worldwide phenomenon. It’s unclear if the movie actors will reprise their roles for the show. If the studios are to replicate the big screen success, the show will definitely need to retain the same charm and wit, so hopefully there’s nothing lost in translation to the smaller format. A premiere date hasn’t been revealed, so we’ll watch out for that as it hits.
