If you thought your smartphone addiction was bad, get a load of this. According to CNBC, a doctor has diagnosed the first person with Google Glass addiction. No, we’re not kidding, though we wish we were. Here’s how the story goes: apparently a member of the U.S. Navy checked into a Navy hospital in San Diego for treatment with alcoholism. As the doctor continued to monitor the patient’s progress, however, he discovered that the patient had a Google Glass addiction.
“When the therapist would ask him a question, he would have this repeated movement of placing his index finger to the right side of face, similar to trying to turn on the Glass,” Dr. Andrew Doan said, according to CNBC. The patient had reportedly been wearing a pair of Google Glass for as many as 18 hours per day and, apparently, that eventually created some sort of real reliance on the hardware. Doan said that the patient reported Google Glass-related dreams, too, and that it the symptoms are still present more than 35 days later, though are subsiding.
Scary stuff, but it does make sense. If you’re used to wearing something in front of your face for the majority of the time you’re awake, it seems really plausible that your mind would start to rely on that constant data feed of information that’s being fed to your brain. Now I know why I dream about blogging.
