When actor Kevin Bacon’s wife, Kyra Sedgwick, left television as relentless deputy chief Brenda Lee Johnson on The Closer, I was beside myself. Thankfully, her hubby and his new show, Fox’s The Following, stepped in to help fill the void.

Well, Kyra — since you’re well-versed with TV mysteries, you may want to have a word with your man about how to keep certain things hush: Bacon, what gives with you tweeting a spoiler?

I suppose it’s easy to get confused. The tidbit referred to a major plot twist in the latest episode that aired in the U.S. The problem was that international viewers hadn’t yet seen it. The spoiler was first tweeted by @jodigomes, a fan who was expressing approval over the latest development, and then got retweeted by Bacon.

Uh oh. When he realized what he’d done, he raced to delete the tweet and apologized for the gaffe.

Unlike carefully crafted talk show appearances and written press releases, social media is obviously unforgiving. Things instantaneously get out there, and once they’re out, you can’t take it back. (Let that be a lesson for impulse tweeters, drunk Facebookers and others who don’t think before they hit post.)

In all honesty, it’s kind of surprising that this type of thing doesn’t happen more often, given the rise of instantaneous social media coupled with broadcasters’ penchant for international schedule-shifts. However, the entertainment industry is getting wise to this. (Anyone watch The Walking Dead? Those actors are tighter-lipped about leaks than Apple.)

Ironically, as a FBI consultant hunting down a serial killer with a cult following, Bacon plays Ryan Hardy as a guarded and rather closed-off protagonist. In other words, Hardy probably would’ve punched Bacon in the head for not being able to keep his mouth shut.
