The First Trailer for Ant-Man Has Finally Been Released

Maybe Paul Rudd can pull it off. That’s all I’m left thinking after watching the first official teaser for Marvel’s Ant-Man. It’s hard to judge a movie based on trailers these days, but given the terrific track record of Marvel movies over the past few years, we’re going to give those involved the benefit of the doubt. Rudd definitely fits the reluctant softy, and it looks like he might actually be convincing as someone who wants to save humanity (or at least his young daughter).

The big themes here are typical of a superhero flick, or any action movie really: redemption, family, right and wrong. Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) seems to have a prior relationship (or interest) with Scott Lang / Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), though we don’t know how they connect in the film. The majority of the teaser is filled with Douglas’ Pym talking to Lang about second chances and his potential to be Ant-Man. Pym says he’s been watching Lang for a while, which means Pym sees something in Lang that he might not see in himself.

Perhaps Lang has been stealing from Pym’s facilities, or maybe they’re somehow connected in another way. The trailer doesn’t make it crystal clear, but we do find out that, yes, Lang does dawn the Ant-Man suit, though he’s not overly fond of the Ant-Man name. The teaser is heavy on emotion, with very little action. We get to see Ant-Man ride his noble steed, and we do get a glimpse of his shrinking ability. But we don’t find out who he fights, and why.

That will all be revealed in due course; the film is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2015.
