Brace yourself, because the first teaser for The Fantastic Four reboot has been released, and it’s… not what we expected. Compared to the brighter, slightly cheesy FF movies from the mid-2000s, the new film looks decidedly dark and moody. It seems like it’s trying very hard to combine the emotion of trailers for Interstellar and Man of Steel. The superhero-ness of it all isn’t the focus, which is fine—this is a teaser, after all. But it leaves us unfulfilled. I suppose that’s the point of teasers.
Below is the official synopsis of the film:
Four young outsiders teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friends turned enemy.
The saving grace behind this project is the cast, which includes the rising popularity of Miles Teller (Reed Richards / Mr. Fantastic), Kate Mara (Sue Storm / The Invisible Woman), Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm / The Human Torch), and Jamie Bell (Ben Grimm / The Thing). Josh Trank, who helmed indie hit Chronicle, is directing.
How does everyone feel about the seemingly darker, grittier Fantastic Four? It’s certainly trying to establish a certain tone by focusing more on the science. And by changing the origin story, the movie is already estranging longtime Fantastic Four fans. So it’s off to an uneven start, but since this is just a teaser, perhaps a longer look will change our minds.
The Fantastic Four will hit theaters on Aug. 7, 2015.
