Mockingjay – Part 2 might not be the last time we see The Hunger Games on the big screen. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer told investors during an earnings call on Friday that the studio is exploring the possibility of a prequel or sequel, though no other concrete details were shared. It’s very possible Feltheimer threw that nugget to investors in an attempt to gauge market response. But, I mean, of course folks would want more movies from The Hunger Games universe.
Based on stories created by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games has become a worldwide movie sensation, making it a prime candidate to live beyond the world Collins created. It was pretty obvious Lionsgate wanted to milk the franchise when it split Mockingjay into two films, and Feltheimer even said he is using what Warner Bros. did with Harry Potter as an example of what Lionsgate might do next. (Warner Bros. is creating a Harry Potter prequel of sorts with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.)
The thing about The Hunger Games, however, is that the story is so contained that there might not be much room for expansion. A prequel makes the most sense, but, without spoiling Mockingjay, a sequel doesn’t really seem like it could work; the end is satisfying as is. If Lionsgate does decide to go in the direction of a prequel, it could mean Jennifer Lawrence, who is a big reason why the big screen adaptation is so successful, won’t be involved.
In any case, it was also announced The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 will be released in both IMAX and IMAX 3D when it hits theaters on Nov. 20, 2015. With the idea of a prequel and sequel now out there, we’ll see how this one develops. Part 2 of Mockingjay will no doubt be a success, but I imagine Feltheimer will use that to gauge just how badly people want more.
