‘Crimson Peak’ trailer shows Guillermo del Toro at his best

Del Toro and horror. That’s pretty much all you need to know about Crimson Peak, a new film coming from the esteemed director. It’s a slight departure from Kaiju and titanic robots, and that’s why we’re so excited. His imagination of the macabre is on full display here, setting up a mysterious and tragic world set in a mountainous region of northern England. Ugh, why does everything 19th century have to be so darn creepy?

According to IMDB’s official synopsis, Crimson Peak will focus on an aspiring author who is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Caught in the middle is Tom Hiddleston, who apparently isn’t who he appears to be. (He’s Loki, duh.) It’s been a while since we saw del Toro in the director’s chair, and Crimson Peak definitely looks like a welcome return.

The house in which the film takes place looks delightfully disturbing; definitely not the kind of place I’d ever agree to spend the night in. A very House on Haunted Hill vibe. Jessica Chasten even says it herself, “There are parts of the house that are unsafe.” Any home with a mechanical clown that barfs up copper balls is on my list of places never to visit.

At one point an apparition summoned up through the floor, and that’s about the time I decided to stop watching. Crimson Peak will hit theaters on Oct. 16, 2015.
