The first spinoff Star Wars film is being called Star Wars: Rogue One, with a release date set for Dec. 16, 2016. That’s one year after The Force Awakens is set to hit theaters, meaning fans will have plenty of new content to digest over the coming years. We already knew Disney had major plans for the Star Wars franchise, and now the big pieces are being put into place.
Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will helm the new project (the rumors were right!), with rising star Felicity Jones set for the main role. What role? We don’t know. At this point, it’s unclear what the story will focus on, but we have some theories. Our Editor-in-chief, Sean Aune, speculated Rogue One might tell the story of the Rogue Leader from A New Hope.
There will likely be a ton of speculation coming through the pipeline over the next several months, and with filming set to begin this summer, we’ll probably see plenty of rumors flying around. We’re expecting a new trailer for The Force Awakens to drop sometime in April (there’s a Star Wars Celebration being held that month), so the Star Wars hype is about to go into overdrive.
