Google is betting big on robots. We’ve all seen videos of the that terrifying four-legged robo-dog, but the company’s latest project could be a little less scary and a lot more useful.
Johnson & Johnson announced plans this week to develop a new surgery-assisting healthcare robots with Google. The project promises to give surgeons improved accuracy, reducing scarring and trauma significantly. The result could mean faster healing times for anyone receiving invasive surgery.
“This collaboration with Google is another important step in our commitment to advancing surgical care,” said Johnson & Johnson’s surgery group chairman Gary Pruden. “Together, we aim to put the best science, technology and surgical know-how in the hands of medical teams around the world.”
The partnership is set to kickoff within the second quarter of 2015, though it’s unclear how long Google expects this project to take. The company’s invested in several other forms of medical research, including a smart contact lens capable of measuring glucose levels. Calico Labs is hard at work on a cure for aging, and there’s no way of knowing how many other similar efforts are already underway as part of Google X.
