‘Jurassic World’ clip is a little cringeworthy

I just… don’t know. Chris Pratt has a unique ability to be goofy and likable, but I’m not sure that charm is working in Jurassic World. MTV shared a clip of the movie on Thursday, and it looks… let’s just say it doesn’t look great. And that was to be expected, but it’s also a little disappointing. The tone seems to be much different compared to the first film.

This was primed to be the kind of turn-off-your-brain-and-enjoy-the-ride type of viewing experience, but sometimes you just can’t ignore the cheese and improbability of the whole situation.

We actually learn quite a bit from the lone clip. Chris Pratt’s character, Owen Grady, is a bad boy researcher who is being recruited by Bryce Dallas Howard, who acts as the park’s operations manager. It seems Howard’s character, Claire Dearing, believes Grady is the only one qualified enough to evaluate the paddock that was built to display the freshly engineered Indominus Rex.

But, as I’m sure we’ll find out, no enclosure will be able to contain the genetically modified beast, so it’ll be up to Grady to save the day.

We also find out that Grady and Dearing have some sort of romantic history, which means the film will probably be filled with that underlying tension and probably a lot of sex jokes. Typical. I’m hoping this clip isn’t indicative of the movie as a whole. It’s not horrible—I love me a good popcorn movie. But it certainly doesn’t match what we’ve seen in the trailers, which hopefully haven’t spoiled all of the good action sequences.

Jurassic World will hit theaters in the U.S. on June 12.
