For your entertainment, below is the synopsis, per IMDb, of the 1980 film Flash Gordon:
A football player and his friends travel to the planet Mongo and find themselves fighting the tyranny of Ming the Merciless to save Earth.
Does that not sound like a movie you’d want to see right this second? If that doesn’t do it for you, we’ve also included a video from YouTube that sums the movie up in a succinct six minutes; it’s the most bizarre, confusing and mind-blowing video you’ll see all day—an overacted, over-dramatic soap opera that reminds me of an even less serious Austin Powers.
I bring this up because it sounds like Flash Gordon will make his triumphant return to the big screen. The Hollywood Reporter says Matthew Vaughn, who directed the brilliant Kingsman: The Secret Service, is in talks to helm a film based on the famous comic strip. Gordon is one of the older pop culture heroes, making his first appearance all the way back in 1934.
Vaughn has shown an affinity for geek culture, so it’s a good fit. If it’s anything like the movie from the 80s, then people are in for a big treat. According to TechnoBuffalo’s Editor-in-Chief, Sean Aune, the 1980 movie “is both great and horrible all at once.” Based on the six minute clip at the foot of this post, I tend to agree.
“We are going to erase your memory.”
“Don’t do that. I spent my whole life trying to fill it.”
