M. Night Shyamalan goes back to his horror roots in ‘The Visit’ trailer

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge that, yes, M. Night Shyamalan has made some very smart, very entertaining movies. But there came a point when the director hit a steep decline, and he hasn’t been able to recover since. I guess it’s commendable that the man hasn’t given up, enduring flop after flop. The Visit, a new horror-comedy coming out this fall, looks poised to turn his fortunes around. (It looks way better than After Earth, let’s put it that way.)

Here’s the official synopsis:

A single mother finds that things in her family’s life go very wrong after her two young children visit their grandparents.

After watching the trailer, I’m intrigued; The Visit looks equal parts creepy and suspenseful. But, why, oh why, is this family just now finding out that their grandparents are a bit loony? Things seem to start off just fine, but slowly the situation descends into madness.

“Bedtime here is at 9:30,” the grandpa says to his grandchildren. “It’s probably best you two shouldn’t come out of your room after that.”

Well that’s not ominous. It’s like telling a Mogwai not to eat after midnight; he’s going to eat!

The trailer doesn’t fully reveal what’s actually wrong with the grandparents, just that they’re a little kooky and old—not a crime, right?. The trailer simply implies that, oh, their behavior isn’t normal. But why? That’s the whole mystery of this found footage-style film. Maybe they’ve run out of denture cream. I’d be mad, too.

“They’re just old,” the single mom defends. A perfect explanation.
