KERMIT THE FROG, GONZO THE GREAT

A new take on The Muppet Show is coming to ABC, one that’ll feature “more adult” content, according to the official announcement. The style and tone is supposed to be more in line with a show like The Office or Parks and Recreation, which utilized a one camera documentary-style shooting method.

“The Muppets” return to prime time with a contemporary, documentary-style show that, for the first time ever, will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, breakups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires; a more adult Muppet show, for kids of all ages.

The Muppets has seen a resurgence of sorts over the past few years, buoyed by a pair of highly successful movies, mostly notably 2011’s The Muppets, which starred Amy Adams and Jason Segel. Bill Prady (The Big Bang Theory) and Bob Kushnell (Anger Management) will write and serve as executive producers, ABC said.

It’s unclear when the show will premiere, but I don’t imagine it’ll be too long before we see something. I’m a little surprised this is going for a more adult-oriented audience, though ABC does note that The Muppets is still a show “for kids of all ages.”
