Film Fondue: Boba Fett spinoff, and Joss Whedon for Star Wars

I don’t even know where to begin. Following a big Star Wars spread in Vanity Fair, we saw a ton of awesome Suicide Squad photos, giving us a more detailed look at Harley Quinn, Deadshot and Killer Croc. It got better, though, with news that a new Indiana Jones is on the way, and, on the Marvel front, the full cast and plot synopsis for Captain America: Civil War was revealed. No rest for the weary.

For TV fans, we saw news of a Supergirl show coming to CBS, and a trailer for Sense8, a Netflix original from the minds of the Wachowskis (The Matrix).

Age of Ultron was only the beginning of a big summer, and an even bigger next few years. It’s never been a better time to be a comic/sci-fi/horror fan. That said, are we reaching peak superhero? Civil War is seemingly Avengers 2.5, what with Black Panther, Baron Zemo, Ant-Man, Vision, Scarlet Witch, and others set to appear. And the movie is only a year away.

We’ll have plenty more in the coming days and weeks. While we catch our breath, check out some of the rumors, announcements, and trailers we didn’t get a chance to check out.

Say hello to Cyclops’ parents in X-Men: Apocalypse

John Wick 2 is a go

John Wick was a sleeper action movie that took a lot of people by surprise. Keanu Reeves isn’t exactly young anymore, but he proved he can still churn out a solid leading man performance. To capitalize on that momentum, a sequel has been confirmed, which is awesome considering how much we loved the first film was. You’d think by now, though, that people would know not to mess with John Wick. [ComingSoon]

Boba Fett origin story

Everyone’s favorite bounty hunter is getting his own origin story. We’ve been hearing for quite a while that Boba Fett would get his own stand-alone movie, and The Wrap is reporting it’s pretty much a done deal. Now if Disney could just find a director; also, I wonder who will be chosen for the leading role? I choose me. [TheWrap]

Spider-Man is close to getting a director

Like its list of actors, Marvel Studios apparently has a short-list of potential directors for the upcoming stand-alone Spider-Man movie. Who are they? It’s quite the mix: Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), Ted Melfi (St. Vincent), Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (Vacation), and Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite). Diverse, and a little unexpected. Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) is also mentioned, though only as a cursory suggestion. [Latino-review]

Infinity War gets its writers

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote Captain America: The Winter Soldier, will return for both parts of Avengers: Infinity War. That means the two scribes are teaming up with the Russo brothers, who were confirmed to direct the two-part finale. [HollywoodReporter]

Vacation gets a red-band trailer

Listen: I think another Vacation movie is a bad idea. Chevy Chase isn’t funny, and his aloof shtick ran its course many, many eons ago. Luckily, this is only a Vacation movie in spirit, instead moving to a new family and a new cast. This time it focuses on Rusty Griswold (the son) and his family, who decide to go on a road trip to Walley World. It sounds awful, but it looks a lot better than I thought it would. And its self-awareness is just perfect.

Three Stooges sequel

Speaking of movies that should never happen, the Three Stooges reboot is getting its own sequel. The old Three Stooges TV show will never stop being funny. But the slapstick formula is only tolerable in small doses. In a more contemporary setting, and over a full-length film, the charm is lost, and the more vulgar approach of the reboot just isn’t as funny. But it’s happening, for better or worse. Joss Whedon for Star Wars?

Now that Joss Whedon is no longer tied up with Avengers duty, Lucasfilm is apparently eyeing him for a Star Wars job. With Josh Trank abandoning his untitled Star War spinoff, could Whedon be a front-runner? It’s a tantalizing prospect, but probably won’t happen.
