The Muppets are coming back to TV in a more adult-oriented show—and it looks absolutely hilarious. I was skeptical ABC could apply The Office formula to a show about puppets living in a human world, but it works perfectly. Seriously, the jokes are smart, sharp and the self-awareness of the show and the one-camera formula adds some beautiful irony. Yes, I’m going to watch this when it airs later this year.
The new show will give you a look at the lives of Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie and Gonzo like you’ve never seen them before. They have girlfriends, personal drama, stress, and they sit in traffic, just like you and me. I’m particularly curious to see how poor Fozzie deals with his relationship and whether or not his girlfriend’s parents will ever accept him as a suitor.
A lot of the jokes are dependent on your nostalgia for The Muppets universe, but they nail it (at least in the trailer), which gives me high hopes for the show as a whole. I honestly expected something that was forced and completely formulaic, but it works much better than expected.
I’m still mourning the death of ABC’s Trophy Wife, but The Muppets doesn’t look half-bad. The more documentary-style show is set to make its debut later this year.
