Fox is moving forward with The New Mutants, an X-Men spinoff focused on a completely separate group of mutants in the Marvel universe. They are essentially the younger students at Professor X’s school for the gifted. We’ve actually seen one of the new mutants, Sunspot, in Days of Future Past, so perhaps the film will center on that core group, which also included Cannonball, Wolfsbane, Karma and Mirage.
Deadline reports Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars) is being lined up to co-write and direct. Although Boone doesn’t have many films to his name, he already proved he can handle big projects aimed at more youthful audiences. Depending on which group of mutants Fox decides to go with, there’s potential for a lot of new characters to be introduced.
Next up for the X-Men franchise is X-Men: Apocalypse, while Fox also has Deadpool in the pipeline. Additionally, there’s a Gambit movie being planned, while Hugh Jackman already confirmed he’ll play the role of Wolverine in a third film.
It’s unclear where The New Mutants will fit in the studio’s road map, but with Boone already confirmed for other projects, it’ll be a few years at least before we see the new cast of mutants on the big screen.
There are several other mutants involved in The New Mutants group, it just depends on which volume you’re looking at. Other characters include Blink, Magma, Magik, Sprite and Warpath.
