We’re in the middle of a renaissance of comic book films and it seems like comic book television shows are just getting started. The newest member of DC’s stable, Supergirl, was recently ordered up for a season by CBS, and now we get our first look at it with a 6 minute summary of what looks to be the pilot.
Supergirl comes from Berlanti Productions – you might remember that name from The CW’s Arrow and The Flash.
Just about every channel has a comic book show airing or in the works right now, though NBC’s Constantine is on the way out, Fox’s Gotham is struggling, and many are worried about their take on the Vertigo property Lucifer.
CW’s shows are the most obviously comic-booky and they’ve also been the best-received by fans as well. With Greg Berlanti at the helm of Supergirl as well, I actually have some reason to get excited about this show. If CBS can leave it alone, it could be a lot of fun based on this short clip. I’ll admit it has a bit of a Black Widow: Age of Me feel to it at the beginning, but for a character like Supergirl, that kind of works as a starting point. Melissa Benoist seems to fill both of her character’s identities pretty well, too.
The show seems to pick up on some of what we saw in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, interestingly, but it doesn’t follow slavishly. The character is treated as an alien like Superman was, and many people are suspicious of her. She also mentions that the emblem on her suit isn’t an “S” but her family’s coat of arms. However, the show is bright and has an optimistic feel to it.
There’s a lot to be excited about here, from the producer and costume design to the effects we’ve seen so far. I just hope they stop referring to her cousin – the show can’t actually say Superman) every five minutes after the first episode, because that’s going to get old fast.
We can look forward to seeing more of Supergirl, most likely, at San Diego Comic-Con, but definitely when it starts airing Monday nights at 8 p.m. on CBS in November.
