The days of Mega Man being dead are about to be put to rest themselves. Capcom has revealed plans to rejuvenate its classic franchise with a new animated television show in collaboration with Man of Action Entertainment and Dentsu Entertainment USA. The series will be 26 episodes long, and it will air in 2017. Credits extend to the creative minds behind Ben-10, Generator Rex, and most importantly, Big Hero 6.
Probably not so coincidentally, Mega Man also turns 30 years old in 2017. Hint, hint.
“We are very excited about the opportunity to introduce an all-new Mega Man to loyal fans and kids,” said Dentsu Entertainment CFO Yuichi Kinoshita, commenting on the deal. “Having a celebrated character from Japan reimagined by Man Of Action is the ideal project for Dentsu Entertainment USA.”
Man of Action’s Duncan Rouleau said, “The 1990s Mega Man TV series was cool and different than other series targeted at kids during that time. It featured great action, but also brought the laughs. ”
“Mega Man is a character that is even more relevant for today’s kids and we are really looking forward to creating something new that still respects the long tradition of the character.”
I have to agree. Mega Man has been one of the few video game characters to survive the jump to other entertainment mediums in America. The Ruby-Spears cartoon from the early 90s holds up a lot better than you would think, and Mega Man also stars in his own critically successful Archie Comic these days. I’m hoping that this comic is the model for which the cartoon is based on.
Let’s not forget that Mega Man also pops up in Super Smash Bros. and is totally awesome.
Dare I predict this as well, but do we have a shot at seeing Mega Man 11 being released at about the same time? My heart is sizzling at the thought, just as long as it doesn’t go the dreadful path of Sonic Heroes. Kid tie-in games are never good, and all parties involved better knock it out of the park if they try to get a game out of this.
I wonder how it will compare to the Mighty No. 9 cartoon, if and when that ever gets made.
