Netflix has announced that it will be expanding its reach across Southern Europe later this year, arriving in Italy, Spain, and Portugal. The popular movie streaming service is already available in 13 European countries, and around 50 countries worldwide.
All three countries will get Netflix in October, Netflix says, and it’s likely to be priced at around €7.99 a month — the same price those in other European countries pay. Providing the rollout goes well, Netflix has even bigger expansion plans for 2016.
The Verge reports that by the end of next year, the company “plans to expand to 200 countries — nearly the entire world.”
Company CEO Reed Hastings wants Netflix to be a real competitor to Hollywood film distribution, and it has already produced a string of highly successful original series, including House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and Marco Polo.
Netflix currently has 60 million subscribers around the world, but 40 million of those are in the U.S., and the company believes international expansion is critical to its growth.
