Film Fondue: ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ secrets, and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2′ news

It’s been a relatively quiet week as far as entertainment news is concerned. After a bombshell of Captain America news leaked, Marvel officially unveiled who will play Spider-Man for future movies. Oh, and the studio also confirmed the character will make a cameo appearance in Civil War next year before showing up in his own solo film (that part we knew). Excited? You betcha.

As far as the stuff we didn’t cover this week, well, there was a lot of interesting news, the biggest of which being a new villain possibly being introduced in Avengers: Infinity War. That movie is still a ways off, though the character could actually be teased as soon as Guardians of the Galaxy 2—or maybe even earlier. We’ll get to that.

In addition to plenty of rumors, Jason Statham said he’ll likely return in Furious 8, while Peyton Reed, director of Ant-Man, said the movie is finally complete. And just in time, because TechnoBuffalo is actually going to the movie’s premiere in Los Angeles this upcoming Monday.

Finally, there are a few notable movies coming out this weekend, including Ted 2 and Max. (No, not another Mad Max. I wish.)

Wolverine in X-Men: Apocalypse

Here’s a nice little surprise. Although there hasn’t been an official confirmation (or denial), it looks like Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will appear in X-Men: Apocalypse after all. A leather company tasked with making a backpack for the movie let slip that the special accessory is specifically for Hugh Jackman, “who is filming the new X-Men movie in Montreal.” And there you have it. Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation international trailer

A new international trailer for Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation has been released, and while it doesn’t feature any new footage, it does frame the movie’s plot more concisely, revealing exactly what to expect from the spy thriller. It looks awesome—and that plane stunt Tom Cruise did is still insane.

No more Hannibal

After three exceptional seasons—well, two and 1/4—NBC has officially canceled Hannibal. Bryan Fuller, executive producer of the show, said he enjoyed the run, adding how proud he was to be a part of the experience. It probably lasted longer than people expected, but the all-you-can-eat buffet has finally spoiled. [ComingSoon]

A new villain for Avengers: Infinity War

A sketchy casting call points to the possibility of Magus appearing in Infinity War, which doesn’t hit theaters until May 4, 2018. Magus, who assembles the Infinity Gauntlet, is the bad side of Adam Warlock. Worse, he also creates doppelgängers of Earth’s mightiest heroes in an effort to rule the universe. It seems like a stretch such a big detail would be included in a casting call, but who knows. [IGN]

Jason Statham in Furious 8

After being locked up at the end of Furious 7, it sounds like we haven’t heard the last of Deckard Shaw. When speaking to Access Hollywood, Statham said he’s in talks to reprise the role, saying those involved have “got something good up their sleeve.” We’ll take your word for it Jason Statham! Ant-Man has officially been completed

According to Ant-Man director, Peyton Reed, the film is officially complete. And not a moment too soon, as the Los Angeles premiere is next Monday. “I can’t wait for you to see it,” Reed said. I can’t wait for me to see it either. Unfortunately, for plebs like you and me, we’ll have to wait until it hit theaters in the U.S. on July 17.

Star Trek 3 has begun filming

A few Star Trek stars—Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana, who play the film’s on-screen couple—were on set this week, suggesting filming is underway. And according to Sci-Fi Pulse, principal photography at the Squamish Boulders in British Columbia has begun, so it sure looks like things are about to take off for the film, which is scheduled for a July 8, 2016 release. [ComingSoon]

Star Trek 4 is probably happening

Both Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have reportedly signed on for a Star Trek 4. No confirmation about a fourth movie has been made, but given the success of the first two, it’s probably going to happen. It’s just a matter of when. [HollywoodReporter]

Mr. Robot has already been renewed

Based on the strength of the show’s pilot, USA has already renewed Mr. Robot for a second season. The pilot was actually posted online a month ahead of the show’s official air date (which was this past week), and since then has been watched 2.6 million times. Those are some big numbers. Not only that, but it’s being praised for accurately portraying hacker culture, which is something Hollywood has failed to do. So even though the show is just getting started, get ready for season two. [Gizmodo]

The Collector in Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is still a few years away, which means we know very little about what to expect. Who will return? Who will be introduced? One character we’ll probably see is Benicio Del Toro’s The Collector, though it doesn’t sound like anything is final. “It’s not up to me,” Del Toro said. Let’s be honest here: he’ll probably be in the movie, but we still won’t call this a sure thing. [IGN]

Tyrese Gibson and Chris Pine for Green Lantern

Following rumors of a big Green Lantern announcement, Tyrese Gibson on Friday posted an image to Instagram that isn’t exactly subtle. In the image, we see a depiction of Gibson as John Stewart, along with (we think) Chris Pine as Hal Jordan. The image clearly has a date of 2020, though no official announcement has come from Warner Bros. just yet. Expect an announcement at Comic-Con in July, however. [TyreseGibson]
