Following the demise of the promising but ultimately disappointing Zombieland TV show, Amazon has announced five of the 14 pilots will turn into series. The online retailer announced on Wednesday that Alpha House, Betas, Annebots, Creative Galaxy and Tumbleaf have been approved for full series runs, exclusively available through Prime Instant Video later this year and early 2014. The shows were chosen based off customer feedback—you asked for it, folks.
Netflix has largely been at the forefront of original content, and Amazon is clearly intent on beefing up its own library. The Seattle-based company previously introduced a number of pilots as a trial to test the TV waters. Based on customer feedback, a number of shows were ditched, including Zombieland, which failed to capture the charm and humor of the movie.
Talking about Amazon’s approach to TV, Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios, said the company plans on introducing more pilots for customer feedback. If reception is good, Amazon might move forward with even more original content. “This is just the beginning,” Price said. Garry Trudeau, Alpha House creator, added, “We’re thrilled to have emerged safely from this harrowing exercise in online democracy.”
If ever there was an opportunity to provide input into exactly what you watch, Amazon’s model might be it. Two of the five shows chosen are comedies, while three are children’s shows.
