It’s been a few years since Edward Snowden shocked the world with details on the NSA’s massive data mining operating. Now the first trailer for Snowden the movie, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the famous leaker, is finally here.
For two minutes and thirty nine seconds, everybody at NSA just stopped working. https://t.co/OLjCV6wkGp

The movie is directed by Oliver Stone (Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July) and also stars Zachary Quinto (Spock from the new Star Wars movies) as journalist Gleen Greenwald and Nicolas Cage as an unnamed government employee.
The trailer mostly focuses on the lead-up to Snowden’s big leak. He’s discharged from the military due to an injury and ends up taking a job with the NSA. After discovering the full scope of what’s happening he decides to act.
We even see Snowden steal the actual files, hiding them inside a Rubik’s Cube to sneak them past a metal detector. It’s unclear if that’s how it actually happened, but Snowden did use a Rubik’s Cube to identify himself when he first met with journalists in Hong Kong. The film is “based on true events,” so it’s likely Stone stretched the truth at some moments.
Once the leak hits the movie transforms into an action-packed thriller filled with explosions and car chases. It looks like a lot of fun, but hopefully Snowden will also have something interesting to say about privacy, encryption and government surveillance.
The film hits theaters on September 16. Take a closer look in the gallery below.
