Han shot first. Greedo shot first. The Force shot first. This debate’s never going to die. But now we have some new evidence that Han Solo was the scoundrel back then that Princess Leia said he was.
Speaking to the NY Daily News, actor Paul Blake, the guy in the Greedo suit, talked about his experience filming the scene.
“It said it all in the original script,” he explained. “We played the scene in English and at the end of the scene, it reads, ‘Han shoots the alien.’ It’s all it says and that’s what happened.
Despite being the one at the wrong end of the blaster, Blake prefers the original version.
“It would be lovely to see them go back to the original version, I much preferred it,” he said. “And it does give Greedo a bit more glory if he’s just blown away.
Blake points out that, if Greedo did shoot first, that means he missed Han from just a couple feet away.
“He’s a worse shot than a stormtrooper!”
George Lucas made Han into a shady rogue when the movies originally released. He had a heart, but it took a bit of work to draw it out. Later, as Lucas went back and tweaked the series, adding in lots of neat effects, he also re-wrote who Solo was entirely with this one change. Instead of a flawed character in need of redemption, he turned him into someone who started as a saint.
Like I said, it’s a debate that’ll never end. It’s just that on one side of the debate is George Lucas and on the other side is just about every Star Wars fan ever. And Greedo.
