In December, Michael Fassbender will ditch his mutant powers for 15th century Spain as an assassin named Aguilar. And before the first teaser trailer drops on Wednesday, The Los Angeles Times has shared two new pictures from the film, which also stars Marion Cotillard.
Here is the movie’s official synopsis:
Callum Lynch discovers that his ancestor Aguilar, from 15th century Spain, was an Assassin. Callum relives Aguilar’s memories to gain knowledge and skills necessary to confront the Templars—age-old enemies of the Assassins—in the present day.
Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series has undergone a number of different iterations over the years to varying success, the last of which was 2015’s Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, which followed the Frye twins through Victorian era London. Despite the game’s favorable critical response, Ubisoft this year decided to take a break from its annual release cycle and instead focus on releasing something in 2017.
Based on the movie’s plot synopsis, the film should be pretty familiar to longtime fans of the franchise. For newbies to the series, 20th Century Fox is no doubt banking on the star power of Fassbender to ensure a healthy holiday presence. Making movies that are based on video games typically don’t turn out well, but can Assassin’s Creed be the unlikely exception? We’ll find out at the end of this year.
