There were several secret cameos in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the most famous of which was Daniel Craig as a First Order Stormtrooper. And it sounds like director Rian Johnson is going to continue what J.J. Abrams started with something similar in Star Wars: Episode VIII.
Note that there are potential spoilers ahead.
Recent rumors claimed Princes William and Harry would play Stormtroopers in the upcoming film, and a new report from Making Star Wars says Tom Hardy, of Mad Max fame, is going to do the same. If true, it’ll be the best cameo yet.
Apparently Hardy will encounter Finn, aka FN-2187, while out on patrol, and angrily confront him. You might guess what happens next, but it’s actually a ruse. Instead of shouting traitor like that twirling Stormtrooper from Episode VII, Hardy will congratulate Finn on his promotion to First Order spy, and the two will eventually part ways.
It’s a classic misunderstanding and plays perfectly off the tone of the first film, which had plenty of small moments like this, including the scene involving Craig as a First Order trooper. According to Making Star Wars, Hardy won’t take his helmet off or anything like that, so it’s unlikely audiences will even know it’s him.
True or not, it sounds like a fun gag. Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently set for a Dec. 15, 2017 release.
