The Guardians of the Galaxy will take time out of their busy schedules to appear at next week’s Comic-Con celebration in San Diego, and it looks like they’ll have a new friend. Concept art for the upcoming movie has been released early, and it shows off the usual team (along with a baby Groot!). But it’s that character between Peter Quill and Nebula that you should take note of.
The image, shared by director James Gunn, shows Peter Quill, Groot, Rocket, Drax, Gamora, Yondu, and Mantis, a character who will be very familiar to fans of the comic. According to Entertainment Weekly, the movie version of Mantis will be “an acquaintance of the Guardians” played by actress Pom Klementieff (Oldboy).
“She has never really experienced social interaction,” revealed Guardians 2 producer Jonathan Schwartz. “Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.”
Indeed, the Guardians are about as dysfunctional as they come, and that’s why we love them. Schwartz went on to say the baby version of Groot will be a little different from the one we saw in the first film. “He doesn’t have the wisdom and experience of that Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
