When was the last time you threw a tape into a good, old fashioned VCR? Who remembers rewinding because you were too lazy to do it when the movie was finished, and then fast-forwarding through those annoying previews. After that came the battle of adjusting the tracking to make sure the whole image wasn’t distorted with fuzzy imperfections.

Ah, the days of my childhood. Those days are long since gone, ever since DVD replaced VHS as the standard medium for home entertainment. However, believe it or not, some companies out there are still making them, even in technological wonderlands like Japan!

That’s about to change, though, with Funai Electric, the last company in the country to make VCRs, deciding to call it quits. Production in China was proving to be difficult with parts becoming harder to find, and the company, which sold its product worldwide, reported only 750,000 sales last year.

Farewell, VCR. You were a staple of my childhood; alas, all good things come to an end.
