Star Trek Beyond wins the weekend box office

Comic Con has drawn to a close and it’s time to return from looking at upcoming movies to those you can see in the here and now.

1. Star Trek Beyond

The latest entry in the 50 year old Star Trek franchise opened to $59.6M this weekend. While it fell short of the last film, it still comes in third for the entire franchise and looks destined to make back its $185M budget as well as make it to profitiability thanks to overseas sales.

2. The Secret Life of Pets

The Secret Life of Pets landed in secon place this weekend with $29.33M for a new domestic total of $260.7M off of a $75M budget. Globally it stands at $323.7M.

3/4. Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters is in a race for the actual numbers this weekend as it tied for third place with $21.6M and a new domestic total of $86.85M off of its $144M budget.

3/4. Lights Out

New horror film Lights Out is currently tied for third place having brought in $21.6M off of its $4.9M budget.

5. Ice Age: Collision Course

Rounding out the top five was Ice Age: Collision Course which landed with a bit of a thud in the U.S. with $21M off of its $105M budget. Fear not, however, the film series is huge overseas with the last two films bringing in a combined $690M. This film is far more about the foreign numbers than most.
