See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloMarvel has always used careful language to describe how its Cinematic Universe is connected, from its Netflix shows up to tentpole films like Captain America: Civil War. Although the studio has maintained it would be very tough to pull off a crossover between film and TV, fans continue to hold out hope we might see characters such as Jessica Jones and Luke Cage appear in a future Avengers flick. According to Marvel’s head of TV, Jeph Loeb, that’s unlikely to happen.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association, Loeb talked at length about the challenges of executing a crossover:
I can tell you that part of the challenge of doing this sort of thing is that the movies are planned out years in advance of what it is that we are doing. Television moves at an incredible speed. The other part of the problem is that when you stop and think about it, if I’m shooting a television series and that’s going to go on over a six-month or eight-month period, how am I going to get Mike Colter to be able to be in a movie? I need Mike to be in a television show.
Loeb went on to admit that “anything is possible,” and, in fact, we have seen some movie characters crossover into TV territory; Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, for example, briefly appeared in Agents of SHIELD. It’s just a matter of having the stories line up. There have been references in the Netflix shows, sure, but Marvel isn’t going to do something if it doesn’t make sense.
You have to wonder, though, how hard it would actually be to pull off. Marvel says its movies are planned years in advance, yet Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was very likely a last minute addition to Captain America: Civil War. If the studio really, really wanted to put Luke Cage in an Avengers movie—perhaps Infinity War—you have to imagine they’d make it happen.
