See full gallery on TechnoBuffaloThere have been talks of a live-action Star Wars TV series for years, but nothing has ever come of it. Now, thanks to comments made by ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey, a show based on the popular franchise is sounding likelier than ever.
While speaking at the Television Critics Association on Thursday, Dungey was asked point blank whether a show was being planned. After all, with anthology films on the way, there are plenty of opportunities outside of the Skywalker saga to tell more stories. So why not?
“As a fan, I would absolutely love to say, ‘Yes,’” Dungey said when asked about a TV show. “The conversations with Lucas, we had conversations with them and will continue to have conversations with them. I think it would be wonderful if we could find a way to extend that brand into our programming.”
Dungey went on to say talks with Lucasfilm are very secretive at the moment, so it’s very unlikely we’ll learn any tangible details anytime soon. Years ago, a series by Lucasfilm producer Rick McCallum was in the works but was eventually scrapped because it was deemed too expensive.
Marvel has managed to grow a sizable TV and film library over the past few years; what’s to say Disney, parent company of ABC, can’t do the same for Star Wars? With popularity of the franchise is currently at an all-time high, it no longer sounds like a matter of if, but when, no matter the cost.
