Here’s how Games of Thrones handled that big Hodor reveal in different languages

There were a lot of big moments in season six of Game of Thrones, the biggest of which arguably occurred in episode five “The Door.” Spoilers ahead.

Finding out that Hodor’s name was due to clever wordplay was a huge revelation, but it was even more mind-blowing because it was staring us in the face the whole time. Since it relied so heavily on language, translating it so it had the same impact proved difficult.

Thanks to Imgur user HooptyDooDooMeister, we know how the pivotal scene was translated into 21 different languages, from Dutch to Swedish to Japanese. Some of them work perfectly—Danish, Dutch, and Norwegian are pretty close to the English version. Others, well, not so much.

Most of these came from a great GoT Reddit thread and a lot of help from OpenSubtitles.org and Google Translate.

In a lot of cases, HBO had to change the direct translation to a different phrase, which means the impact of that scene wasn’t quite what it was in other languages. You can see the full gallery below to see how HBO handled the different translations.
