The standalone Aquaman movie has found its main villain. James Wan and company are bringing forth Aquaman’s biggest foe, Black Manta, for the solo outing of the son of Atlantis.
Fans of the comics will undoubtedly be excited about Black Manta being included in the Aquaman movie, who was first introduced in 1967 as a deep-sea scavenger. Black Manta kills Aquaman’s father, conjuring a revenge plot by Aquaman, who accidentally kills his Black Manta’s father in retaliation, thus ensuing their bitter war.
The Black Manta character has gone through many storyline shifts throughout the years, including a stint at Belle Reve prison where Amanda Waller recruits him to join the Suicide Squad. Black Manta has no super powers, much like Batman, but still manages to kick ass. His power suit allows him to survive and withstand the pressures of the deep sea.
Jason Mamoa headlines the cast as Aquaman with Amber Heard and Willem Dafoe rounding the cast as Atlanteans Mera and Vulko. No word yet on who will be cast as Black Manta.
Aquaman will be featured heavily in next year’s Justice League by the looks of the first trailer. There are few details about his solo movie but it won’t be surprising if one of the other Justice League members show up in the Aquaman movie as well.
Aquaman is scheduled to hit theaters on July 27, 2018.
