Sci-fi and comedy fans alike may have a new TV show to look forward to. It turns out Seth Rogen and his long-time writing partner Evan Goldberg are working on a new sitcom for FX focused on the singularity. Speaking on The Nerdist podcast, Rogen revealed plans to film a pilot for the series next year.
Rogen wouldn’t offer much more information, but said that the show would adopt a traditional sitcom format. “It’s about artificial intelligence,” he said. “It’s a half-hour comedy about the singularity basically, and I won’t say anything else because I honestly don’t know if it’s [been announced].”
If you’re not familiar with the singularity, here’s a quick breakdown: Essentially, it’s the theory that once artificial intelligence reaches a certain level it will begin to improve and advance by itself at an extremely rapid pace, quickly surpassing humanity as it creates better machines with each new generation. The result could be an age of unimaginable change to our civilization as new technology becomes widespread.
The singularity could also blur the lines between our biological bodies and machines as humans use technology to keep up. People may even decide to upload their minds to some sort of shared consciousness as a result. Some scientists have even predicted this could happen within the next few decades.
It’s scary stuff to think about, but we assume Seth Rogen will take a more comical look at the singularity and what it might mean for humans going through this period of intense transition. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about the new show soon, though there’s no guarantee FX will pick up the pilot for a full season.
