There’s a reason Jurassic Park’s visual effects are so great—here’s how they did it

Jurassic Park came out over 23 years ago, wowing audiences with too-good-to-be-true practical and visual effects. How on earth can a T-Rex look so real and how was that even feasible back in 1993? The answer is surprisingly simple—lots and lots of hard work.

YouTuber Kaptain Kristian released a fantastic behind the scenes look of what went into crafting the special and visual effects of Jurassic Park. In the year 2016, visual effects are expected out of every summer blockbuster. It’s become an overreliance that many lament as an overused tool that takes the audience out of the movie experience. That was the magic of the Steve Spielberg classic—the experience.

Kaptain Kristian points out that Jurassic Park only used 63 individual visual effects shots, compared to Jurassic World’s 2,000 plus shots. Yet, the argument came be made that the former still looks more realistic than the latter; it’s not hard to make. This was the first instance that visual effects and special effects married into one cohesive canvas. Hours and hours were spent studying behavioral patterns in animals; how way they walk, how they the move and their muscular movement.

“Bigatures,” or giant animatronic replicas of dinosaurs, were used to lead the audience into crafting the image of the dinosaur. Once you see the eyes, the teeth, the skin, the introduction of a CGI scene is that much more satisfying. Coupled that with the CGI-shots taken from the vantage point of a human—the experience melded into one realistic and grounded shot. This created a movie that still holds up great 23 years later.

The whole video is a fantastic portrait into how much work went into crafting the masterpiece that is Jurassic Park. You should take five minutes and check out for yourselves above.
