Rings trailer reveals the return of a horror icon

The premise is still the same, but the people being pursued by the perpetually angry Samara are different. In this threequel from director F. Javier Gutierrez, the tape that tormented Naomi Watts all the way back in 2002 is back, only this time, it’s spreading across the internet.

I like how they brought Samara into the modern age by utilizing the internet to spread her horror. My main gripe with introducing yet another follow-up to the venerable 2002 original (which itself was a remake of the Japanese horror film Ringu) is that director Gore Verbinski’s take was so incredibly strong that trying to top it is fruitless.

The good news is that the mythology surrounding the tape and Samara is just as strong as it was over ten years ago, and I’m intrigued to see whether Gutierrez expands on that. With her tape now being shared across the internet, can Samara be stopped?

I think maybe the only way to ensure her evil doesn’t reach you is to never own a smartphone, TV, or computer ever again. Now, that is a scary thought.

Rings is set for an Oct. 28 release.
