Marvel’s Doctor Strange got help from the creator of Community

Dan Harmon, the genius behind Community and Rick and Morty, was reportedly brought in by Marvel to add some flair to Doctor Strange, which comes out this November. While his involvement sounds unusual, it’s not unprecedented; Marvel hired the Russo brothers, known for their work on Arrested Development and Community, to direct Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Harmon was brought in following principal production to write a few scenes “for additional photography.” So, yes, he was brought in during reshoots—something virtually all big Hollywood movies go through. Given the complexity of Doctor Strange as a character, it sounds like Harmon’s talents were utilized to add some levity to what looks like a wildly trippy movie.

Marvel is known for thinking outside of the box, so to speak, when it comes to bringing in talent for its films. To use the same example, the Russo brothers were brought in after predominantly working in TV, and same goes for Joss Whedon. You can also argue that people like Jon Favreau and James Gunn were gambles, but they paid off magnificently.

When you go see Doctor Strange in theaters on Nov. 4, look out for the little moments of levity. Chances are they’re Dan Harmon’s handy work.
