IBM’s Watson creates first AI trailer for Morgan

It appears IBM’s Watson has added another skill you’ll probably never have. 20th Century Fox and IBM teamed up to let Watson create a trailer for the movie Morgan, and it did a pretty damn good job.

Trailers can be trivial, repetitive and often spoil the entire movie. It’s a very fine line between making a great trailer and making a loud collection of footage that never actually tells you what the movie is about. Watson’s version of the Morgan trailer is short, simple and silently haunting.

Given early reviews, Morgan as a movie isn’t anything special, but I can’t deny that Watson’s trailer didn’t pique my interest. The plot of the movie was spoiled with early trailers – scientific child turns on doctors, escapes and causes havoc – yet the trailer does its best to hide spoilers and instead focuses on the uncomfortable tension between Morgan and the supporting characters. This effect is compounded by the creepy score.

IBM analyzed the action of the movie and from this, it was able to extract salient moments to create the trailer. Watson chose all the scenes and music in the trailer, but a human editor was brought on to stitch the trailer together.

It’s quite a technical achievement and more trailer editors should borrow some cues from Watson. Check out the video above to see the trailer and how it was made possible.
