Netflix: Here are some movies you should watch (September)

If you’ve ever found yourself perusing through Netflix’s overwhelming movie offering, you’re not alone. Although embarrassingly rich with great content, it easy to lose track of all the great movies that comes to the streaming site every month. So we decided to comb through the vast lists of movies and let you know of some of the great movies you should watch.

This isn’t an in-depth breakdown, that list would be way too long, but it is a suggestion of some great movies you may have not heard of before and should know about.

Dope

Rick Famuyiwa’s comedy-drama, Dope, follows Malcolm, a high school student in pursuit of a college education all the while craving to experience more than the typical “geek” life. Through the play on these tropes, Famuyiwa delivers a smart, witty and thoughtful examination of what it means to live life set to the backdrop of a crime-ridden Inglewood.

Hector and the Search for Happiness

This feel-good comedy stars Star Trek alum Simon Pegg and Gone Girl Rosamund Pike and follows a disenchanted psychiatrist’s journey around the world to find happiness. The title may hint at a yuppie film, but instead we get a heartfelt examination of complacency and a man’s search to jumpstart the purpose of his life.

Justice League War

With the creation of the DC Extended Universe, many comic book storylines will probably be explored on the big screen in the near future. To catch up, you can either read the comics or watch some fantastic animated DC movies, which won’t disappoint you like their live-action counterparts. Justice League War explores the Darkseid storyline, a possible arc that may be explored in future Justice League movies.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Michel Gondry’s quirky take on the pain of breaking up follows a couple, Joel and Clementine, portrayed by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. Instead of going through normal mourning after a break-up, they take the drastic step of erasing their relationship from their memories, only to discover how much more painful this path is. The atmospheric movie is backed by a score by Jon Brion and a great supporting cast that includes Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood.

The Truman Show

Jim Carrey will always be known of his physical brand of comedy, but every now and then he has a breakthrough in drama. The first movie of his to break out of the comedy bubble was the reality TV spin The Truman Show, which follows Truman, a man who has been raised in a giant community that watches his every move. Carey gives a great performance in a movie with a lot of heart that still serves as one of the highlights of his career. Best Supporting Actor nominee Ed Harris co-stars as a Steve Jobs-like visionary creator of the show.

Back to the Future

This 80’s classic was added to Netflix’s line-up in July and deserves a spot in any Netflix movies list. Marty McFly and Doc Brown’s adventures in a Dolorean throughout the past, present and future influenced our expectations of the future and will always hold a special place in our hearts. Including the entire trilogy would be breaking the rules so I’m only including the first part, but you should watch all three movies.

Chef

Director and star Jon Favreau first started off in the indy circuit with Swingers before jumping off to direct big budget Hollywood blockbusters. But with Chef, he returns to his roots and delivers a character-focused comedy that follows a chef’s descent into the social media abyss and the backlash it can have, forcing him to slum it in the food truck industry, only to rediscover his long-lost love for the creation of food. It also includes a great cast like Robert Downey Jr., John Leguizamo, Sofia Vergara, Dustin Hoffman and Scarlett Johansson.

Hot Fuzz

Before Edgar Wright abandoned the Ant Man project (which ended up alright), he began his career by teaming up with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. They first teamed up for Shaun of the Dead, but they really hit their stride with the buddy-cop film Hot Fuzz, which not only built upon the buddy-cop film tropes, but with the help of a succinct script and fantastic direction, became a great homage to those past movies. Pegg and Frost’s performances are rounded out by quick cameos by Bill Nighy and a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance by Cate Blanchett.

Meet Joe Black

One of Brad Pitt’s early star-turning performances was Meet Joe Black. Pitt stars as a starry-eyed stranger who dies and comes back as Death to befriend a media mogul Bill Parrish(Anthony Hopkins) and his daughter (Claire Forlani). The innocuous friendship hinders on Death’s interest in the real world, but to his surprise, it has a lot more to offer in the form of Parrish’s charming daughter, Susan.

Begin Again

This comedy follows the life of an uninspired music producer Dan Mulligan (Mark Ruffalo) as he is ousted from his record company, battles to save his crumbling marriage and seeks to find the next great music act. Drunkenly stumbling upon Gretta’s (Keira Knightley) performance during a mic night at a bar, he’s convinced she has whatever “it” is to become the next star, which jumpstarts their friendship. The film also stars Adam Levine, James Corden, Catherine Keener and Hailee Steinfeld.
