It’s happening, it’s not happening. It’s happening, it’s not happening. There have been only a few movies in history that have flip-flopped in and out of development hell more often than Sony’s Uncharted, and I’m pretty sure a good many of them are also based on video games: BioShock, Metal Gear, the usual suspects when discussing which video game films will never get made.

But back to Uncharted, the film has once again taken a step into purgatory now that it no longer even appears on Sony’s release schedule. Mostly recently, as in not even two months ago, the film supposedly scored a writer in Joe Carnahan and was slated for a release on June 30, 2017. Now, it doesn’t seem to exist at all.

Plans for an Uncharted film date way back to 2008, but in that time frame, three console games, a Vita game, and a mobile game have all been developed and published. Joe Carnahan is just one of many names attached to the project that have since walked away. This list includes writers David O. Russel, Neil Burger, Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, and Mark Boal, producer Avi Arad, and directors Neil Burger and Seth Gordon.

Let’s not get started on the actors that have been rumored and approached to play Nathan Drake. At this point, it seems pointless to just start throwing names out. This recent drop from Sony’s release schedule makes it seem like it will never happen, and with Naughty Dog no longer interested in working with the series, Hollywood might have lost equal interest as well.

Enjoy your retirement, Nathan Drake.
