In Guardians of the Galaxy, Vin Diesel’s Groot spent the entire movie saying, “I am Groot,” a phrase he repeated until the very end when he changed things up by uttering, “We are Groot.”
While the character’s vocabulary wasn’t exactly extensive, Diesel’s recognizable growl gave the character plenty of gravitas, adding an emotional depth you didn’t know a tree-alien could have.
Now that Groot is just a baby in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, how will Diesel’s approach to the character change?
Simply because I’m getting asked this question more than any other. #BabyGroot #GotGVol2 pic.twitter.com/dNwjQOFGDO

In a Twitter post over the weekend, Guardians director James Gunn responded. Turns out, Diesel will change his voice accordingly. So, it’ll still be Diesel, just not how we’re used to hearing him. Can you imagine Diesel voicing a baby? Can you imagine Diesel voicing a baby tree-alien creature?
It’ll certainly be weird to hear Diesel pitch up his voice to match the smaller character, but it just wouldn’t be right if he wasn’t the one to do it. Now, the question is: Will Baby Groot be more talkative? Or will his vocabulistics be limited to “I” and “am” and “Groot?”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
