Star Wars live-action TV show not coming for a very long time

It’s time to get real about that live-action Star Wars show. With resources dedicated to Star Wars Rebels and Lucasfilm working on a number of feature-length films, it’ll be a long time before the live-action show is on the docket; we’re talking years from now.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Disney-ABC Television president Ben Sherwood said negotiations for a live-action series couldn’t begin until the upcoming films are released. With Episode VIII, Episode IX, and numerous spin-off movies in the works, it could be years before the wheels are in motion.

“Somewhere we hope in a galaxy not too far away there will be a television show that will air on one of our networks,” Sherwood said. “But I wouldn’t get anybody’s hopes up too high. They have a lot of movies to make between now and then.”

Last month, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey revealed there have been ongoing conversations between Lucasfilm and ABC about a potential live-action series. However, Sherwood’s comments suggest that’s all they are at this point: conversations.

Curiously, Sherwood added that discussions about “the next” Star Wars animated show are ongoing as well, so it would seem there are plans beyond Rebels.

Up next for Disney and Lucasfilm is Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which comes out on Dec. 16, followed by Star Wars: Episode VIII at the end of next year.
