The Marvel Cinematic Universe is home to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Pratt. But it might be Kurt Russell, a veteran actor appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, who stands out as the franchise’s biggest new star. Does that mean he’ll show up in other upcoming MCU films down the road? He’s not sure.

Speaking to Fandango at the Toronto Film Festival, Russell talked about his involvement with Marvel, saying he’s unsure about whether or not he’ll appear outside of Guardians 2.

“What you’d have to do is put your mind to it,” Russell said in an interview. “You have to sit down and say, ‘These are my issues, these are my questions.’ I’m an audience too. We all run into our own integrity no matter what, as much as I hate to admit it. I need to find a way that this is going to grow and be fun, and most of all for me it needs to be fun to find as we go along. Right now I got part of it. We have to see. I don’t know.”

Note that there are possible spoilers ahead.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Russell will play Star-Lord’s father, Ego the Living Planet, with the film exploring their relationship and how it fits into the greater MCU. With Ego being such a big character, and Russell such a respected actor, you have to imagine Marvel will want him to play a larger part of Phase Three, which includes Avengers: Infinity War.

That’s just speculation on my part, however, and there’s no telling how large of a role Russell will play in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. We’ll just have to wait and see how that dynamic plays out onscreen and whether or not Marvel sees a future for Russell’s character when the film hits theaters next May.
