In Passengers, Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence embark on a journey to a distant colony planet known as “Homestead II,” but before the 120-year voyage is over, the two wake up from hibernation 90 years from their destination. So what do two people do when they’re the only ones awake aboard a gigantic spacecraft? They fall in love.
While the trailer initially suggests Passengers is going to be a fluffy love story, the stakes suddenly ramp up when all is not what it seems. According to Pratt’s characters, them waking up was no accident. Complicating matters is the fact that the spacecraft they’re traveling on, Starship Avalon, seems to be malfunctioning.
Passengers was in various stages of development over the past several years after it was included on Hollywood’s “Black List,” which is a collection of admired scripts that have yet to be made. (For what it’s worth, Morgan also made it to the Black List, and we all know how that turned out.)
Directed by Morten Tyldum, Passengers is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 21.
