With the newest Star Wars trilogy concluding in 2019 and only a few Star Wars Story films on the horizon, what plans does Disney have for the franchise when the decade turns? Many, many more Star Wars films, according to Disney CEO Bog Iger.
Speaking at a conference this week, Iger talked about the future of Star Wars and Disney’s plans to continue with the franchise in 2020 and beyond. In other words, get comfortable, because the arrival of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Episode VIII over the next 18 months is just the beginning.
Iger revealed he recently heard a pitch from director Colin Trevorrow about what to expect from Episode IX, which doesn’t hit theaters until 2019 and he also said a writer is developing another Star Wars film for 2020 though it wasn’t revealed what the movie will be about.
Coming up, fans can expect to see Rogue One in December, Episode VIII a year after that, and then the Han Solo spinoff starring Alden Ehrenreich in 2018. Disney will then release Episode IX in 2019, but after that it gets murky. There have been rumors of a possible film focused on Boba Fett, while others have called for a film starring Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan, perhaps when he retired to Tatooine. Either way, there’s a rich universe that could extend the Star Wars universe for several more years.
The horizon of the Star Wars franchise is looking bright for Disney though Iger did call Rogue One “an experiment, of sorts,” which can be read as someone who isn’t particularly confident in the final product. We’ll see when the movie hits theaters on Dec. 16, 2016.
