Since The Simpsons first aired in 1989, the show has used couch gags to tell smaller stories before beginning the main narrative. Some of the most famous gags include the horror movie mash-up, The Simpsons in claymation, and Meet the Flinstones. There are hundreds of others.
In this particular case, The Simpsons beautifully parodies the opening of Pendleton Ward’s Adventure Time, which has built a sizable following of its own. What’s cool about The Simpsons riffing on Adventure Time’s opening is fans who might not know about it will be exposed to a really great show.
