Netflix has made original content a priority and its commitment will only get stronger over the next few years.
According to Netflix CFO David Wells, the streaming service is aiming to have half the content it offers be original programming, with the remaining 50 percent represented by licensed TV shows and movies. That means more Stranger Things, more Daredevil, and more Adam Sandler.
At the end of last year, Netflix revealed plans to double the amount of original programming offered in 2016, with a goal of producing 31 shows and movies compared to the 16 in 2015. That figure will continue to go up as the service relies less and less on licensed content, which also means it’s going to spend even more money to keep subscribers entertained. Hopefully, in turn, that doesn’t mean monthly fees continue to rise as well.
Netflix previously said it planned to commit $5 billion in 2016 to producing original content, and even more in 2017 as we anticipate shows such as Iron Fist, The Defenders, Narcos season 3, and more.
According to Wells, Netflix is only about one-third to halfway toward achieving its goal, so a lot of work still needs to be done. Wells said its original programming will continue to be a mix of content owned and produced by Netflix.
Netflix has been on a roll this year, recently releasing The Fundamentals of Caring, Tallulah, and, of course, Stranger Things.
