Indie darling Firewatch is heading to Hollywood. Developer Campo Santo has announced with motion picture production company Good Universe.
Firewatch told the story of a fire watchman, alone in a park and piecing together a mystery with the remote help of his supervisor. The two characters were voiced by Mad Men‘s Rich Sommer and The Walking Dead‘s Cissy Jones.
Good Universe isn’t a huge name yet, but they’ve worked to bring some notable movies to the big screen. Good Universe helped bring the Seth Rogen movies Neighbors, This is the End, and 50/50, and has partnered with director Sam Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures studio for movies like Evil Dead. In other words, this isn’t a video game movie made by a misguided German dude.
“When we met Good Universe we were floored by how they recognize, cultivate, and produce incredible stories,” said Campo Santo founder Sean Vanaman in an official statement. “It’s rare you meet another group that shares so many of your values and makes the process of creating things even more exciting. We can’t wait to see what we make together.”
“Finding extraordinary content is incredibly exciting, and with the Campo Santo team we felt an immediate simpatico with their utterly beguiling storytelling and amazing creative instincts,” said Good Universe co-founder Joe Drake.
The movie doesn’t have a release date or a time frame for that matter, but it’s on the way. It might not be the first movie gamers would’ve requested come to the big screen, but the character driven story and beautiful art direction make it a better match than most stabbing and shooting games, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do.
